This 1½-day interactive workshop covers the elements of effective SPHM programming and how to successfully integrate your program into your organization. It will enable you to learn evidence-based methods and practices to help with our success. This course is taught by national SPHM leaders using discussion and case scenarios for very practical solutions and programming.

Our certified SPHM professionals serve as the faculty for this class and will work with you to develop an action plan for your facility to drive your program forward. 2025WS001: Integrating Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) into Healthcare Facility Design

Date: Monday, March 10, 2025 from 11 am - 4 pm
Presented by: Marie M. Martin, Ph.D., CSPHP, and LeAnn Schlamb MSN RN, EdS

This interactive workshop is designed to guide participants through the essential process of incorporating Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) principles into the renovation or construction of healthcare facilities. Participants will gain practical insights into the various phases of construction and planning, learn to navigate the differences between leased and owned spaces, and understand the distinctions between design-build and design-bid-build contracts.

Key concepts such as the Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) will be introduced, and attendees will work through sample projects at different design and construction stages to explore how SPHM equipment can be integrated effectively. The workshop will also include engaging exercises, such as reviewing vendor-provided resources and utilizing live equipment to evaluate a mockup of a sample room design (if available).

Workshop Objectives:
Identify the phases of planning, design, construction, and activation where SPHM input can enhance outcomes.
Recognize valuable resources to help SPHM professionals incorporate best practices into patient care construction projects.
Analyze construction plans for potential safety concerns.
Decide and Communicate strategies for incorporating SPHM into real-world construction projects.

About the Presenters:

Marie M. Martin, Ph.D., CSPHP is a Program Analyst for the VHA Safe Patient Handling and Mobility program. With a Ph.D. in Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Washington, her extensive experience spans industrial hygiene, curriculum development for OSHA training, and SPHM program leadership within the Veterans Health Administration. Since 2008, she has been deeply involved in integrating SPHM principles into facility planning and construction across the VA system.

LeAnn Schlamb MSN RN, EdS serves as a Clinical Planner for the VA Office of Construction and Facilities Management. With advanced degrees in nursing, forensic nursing, and adult education, her career highlights include developing simulation-based education programs, facilitating SPHM training, and collaborating on system assessments for pre- and post-construction projects. In her current role, she works with multidisciplinary teams to design healthcare spaces that promote safety and excellence in care for Veterans and their families.

This workshop promises to be an invaluable opportunity for professionals involved in healthcare facility planning, SPHM, and construction to gain hands-on experience and actionable strategies for creating safer and more efficient environments.

2025WS002: Building a Business Case: A Clinical, Financial, and Operational (CFO) Approach

This workshop will illustrate and discuss principles of building a business case for advancing SPHM in an acute care environment using three separate, however interrelated sections (clinical, financial, and operational). The principal objective of this pre-conference workshop is to help you build a present state burden analysis suitable to present to members of your senior leadership team.

Dan Roberts brings over 30 years of experience as a healthcare business director and clinician. Having served in critical care and emergency department roles, Dan leverages his expertise to drive meaningful improvements in care delivery. Currently, he is the Senior Manager of Global Health Economics Outcomes Research Modeling at Baxter. Dan's academic credentials include nursing education from Aria Healthcare System and Penn State University, and an MBA from Regent University. His wealth of knowledge ensures attendees leave equipped with actionable insights for advancing SPHM.
